The last thing you want to worry about on a trip is an orthodontic emergency, right? Unfortunately, they still happen, no matter how much you dislike them. When they occur, it’s best to handle the problem and improve the situation as much as possible. To help you do so, our orthodontist, Dr. James Karhohs, has some recommendations for you.

First, adjust the braces hardware. All you need to do is move the broken piece back into place. With a broken bracket, slide the bracket back over the necessary tooth. With a broken wire, push it back into place with the end of a pencil (the eraser). If this is a tough task, just push it to an area that doesn’t bother you.

Second, reach for your orthodontic wax. Place the wax over the broken hardware once you get it in the right position. The wax will keep the bracket or wire from injuring or irritating your gums, cheeks, or tongue. It can also keep the bracket in the proper place, which can help your smile stay on track with treatment as much as possible.

Third, schedule an appointment. All you need to do is call our office, explain the situation, and schedule an appointment for a time when you will be back home. You don’t necessarily have to rush home, so don’t worry too much about immediate treatment.
